Alexander Pope's villa in Twickenham, Middlesex, with characters in 18th century clothing. Engraving from "Collins' Illustrated Guide to London and Neighbourhood", price one shilling; published by William Collins, Sons & Company, London, in 1871. Alexander Pope, writer, designer and satirist, lived in Twickenham between 1719 and 1744, when he died. During that time he constructed a famous grotto, much of which still exists, though the villa was demolished in 1808. Twickenham is now a suburb in the Greater London area.
