This vintage engraving depicts the portrait of Matthew Baillie (1761 - 1823), Scottish physician and pathologist. He was the nephew of anatomist John Hunter, and is remembered for his book that is considered the first publication in English on pathology as a separate subject. Engraved by Henry R. Cook (d. 1847) after the painting by John Hoppner (1758 - 1810), it was published in an 1838 collection of medical portraits and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
