This woodcut engraving by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497 - 1543) depicts astronomers of the era observing the heavens as described in the "Consolation of Philosophy" by Boethius (480 - 525). The sun is to the left and the moon to the right. Note the "star" below the moon that appears to be Jupiter, as it is accompanied by an number of small moons. Published in an 1878 collection of engravings of the Middle Ages, it is now in the public domain.
