An illustration from "The Family Friend" published by S.W. Partridge & Co. (London, 1880). Dick Whittington on Highgate Hill. The caption in the book states that this illustration is taken from a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Company. Dick Whittington, born in the 1350s, left his Gloucestershire home to find work in London, He eventually became Lord Mayor of London and passed into British folklore - mainly as a pantomime character!
