On May 28, 1754, 22-year-old Colonel George Washington led Virginia troops in a raid to attack French troops at Forks of the Ohio. They killed a number of French soldiers, including their commander, Joseph Jumonville, provoking the start of the French and Indian War. The vibrant colors are authentic to this early form of color printing. The dramatic wood engraving appeared in a biography of George Washington by J. T. Headley (1813 - 1897). Published in 1859, it is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
