Description

This is an original sketch of two relaxed men in a Victorian drawing room, having an animated discussion about medical symptoms. The little dog at front seems to be listening but not believing what he is hearing. At some time the sketch has been folded over, and the folds are just visible.

Title: Devoted to his Profession (His profession being, presumably, hypochondriac)

Caption: ES (with every appearance of the liveliest satisfaction) "Well, (it) I haven't got Scarlatina." (Scarlatina is another name for scarlet fever.)

Details: There is a Times newspaper on the floor, and both men are wearing drawing-room slippers.

Date: The sketch is neither signed nor dated, but the use of the hand-written long 's' in Profefsion, for example, dates it to the 1860s at the very latest. (In print, as an example, the long 's' went out of use in The Times of London in 1803.)
