Description

This vintage engraving depicts an astronomer teaching pupils how to measure the location of astronomical objects. He holds a form of quadrant high with his left hand to measure declination, and holds a ruler or measuring rod in his right. A fascinating look at the early days of science in Europe. It appeared in a 13th century manuscript, and a facsimile was published in an 1878 history of the Middle Ages and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
