John Adams Dix (1798 - 1879) was the highest ranking major general of volunteers in the American Civil War. Just prior to the start of the war he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury. He was from New York, and was its Senator in the 1840s, and later briefly served as Governor of New York. Published in 1864 in a Gallery of the Civil War, this engraving is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
