Description

The famous Painted Hall in the former Greenwich Hospital for Royal Navy veterans (now the Old Royal Naval College). Engraving from 'Collins' Illustrated Guide to London and Neighbourhood', price one shilling; published by William Collins, Sons & Company, London, in 1871. The Painted Hall was and is a highly popular tourist attraction and the site of many nationally important events including the lying-in-state of Lord Nelson. Between 1824 and 1936, it was the National Gallery of Naval Art, containing around three hundred paintings of a naval nature.
