This vintage lithograph print depicts Pope Nicholas I, or Nicholas the Great (820 - 867), on the left, with Emperor Louis II (806 - 876), on the right. Louis II, or Louis the German, was grandson to Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne. The print was made after an original in a 9th century manuscript. Published in an 1869 history of religious dress, it is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
