This vintage engraving depicts the portrait of Edward Livingston (1764 - 1836), a prominent American jurist and statesman, influential in drafting the Louisiana Civil Code of 1825, based largely on the Napoleonic Code. He also served as a U.S. Senator representing New York and later Louisiana, and served as Secretary of State. Engraved by Edward Wellmore (b. 1835) after the painting by John Barton Longacre (1794 - 1869). Published in an 1865 collection of American portraits, it is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
