Description

French explorer Robert De La Salle (1643 - 1687) is pictured here on the banks of the lower Mississippi River, in what is now Louisiana, claiming the entire Mississippi basin for France on April 9, 1682. Engraved by an unknown artist, edited by John O'Kane Murray and published in 1879, it is now in the public domain.
