circa 1770: English writer Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784) rescues Irish playwright Oliver Goldsmith (1730 - 1774) from his landlady and scans the manuscript for 'The Vicar of Wakefield'. Johnson is thought to have arranged the publication of the manuscript to save his friend Goldsmith from bankruptcy. An engraving after E M Ward.
