This vintage engraving depicts William Fisher, Registrar of Oxford University, delivering a tedious lecture. It is the creation of William Hogarth (1697 - 1764), the brilliant cartoonist. Hogarth had a great sense of humor, as seen in the characters here. The title of the lecture is "Datur Vacuum", roughly "A Vacuum is Granted". Engraved by T. Cook & Son after Hogarth's painting. It was published in an 1810 collection of Hogarth's work and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
