This vintage engraving depicts the investiture, or bestowing of title, of a Shogun in 19th century Japan. It is based on the sketch of Aime Humbert (1818 - 1900), engraved by Felix-Jean Gauchard (1825 - 1872). It was published in an 1874 memoir of Humbert's travels through Japan and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
