Description
This is a cartoon etching by the well-known Victorian social caricaturist, satirist and cartoonist George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878), dated February 1, 1831. (1831 is in the reign of William IV, but most of Cruikshank's artistic work was in the long reign of Queen Victoria.)

Titled Preservation, this cartoon is very much a social comment, as opposed to his much lighter humorous creations. It illustrates carnage with cudgels and gunfire smoke from flintlock muskets as two opposition factions fight to 'preserve' their way of living.

Wars that were current at the time of this cartoon include the recently-ended Zulu Wars; the Liberal Wars (Portuguese Civil War, which involved the United Kingdom); the July Revolution (French Revolution); November Uprising (Russia); the Belgian Revolution, and the French 'conquest' of Algeria.
