Description
The First Council of Nicaea was convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 325 in the small town of Nicaea (now Iznik, Turkey) near Constantinople (now Istanbul) to settle the dispute over Arianism. The figure shows Arius submissive gesture in front of the council, on the Emperor Constantine (fourth from right, with crown) directs. Woodcut engraving after a miniature from the 4th century, published in 1881.
