The Royal Palace at Lucknow, India, with its gardens. At the time of this illustration, India was ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the British Empire. From ‘The Boy’s Own Paper’ 1879-80, a British newspaper intended for boys which was at that time published by the Religious Tract Society and which featured stories, heroic deeds, facts, educational items and illustrations. This illustration shows extremes of wealth and poverty.
