19th-century illustration of George Washington relinquishing his plans of entering the navy. Washington was the first president of the United States of America, serving from 1789 to 1797. He was born on 22 February, 1732 in Westmoreland, Virginia Colony, USA in a family that owned tobacco plantations and died on 14 December, 1799 in Mount Vernon, Virginia, USA. Engraving published in The Pictorial Life of General Washington by J. Frost, LL.D. (Charles J. Gillis, Philadelphia) in 1847.
