A Coho Salmon struggles upstream to spawn. During the first winter rains, the spawning fish swim 33 miles from the open ocean to lay their eggs and die. The females lay their eggs only after they've found the place where they were born three years before.

Lagunitas Creek, which runs through San Geronimo Valley below Mount Tamalpais in Marin County typically supports the largest wild run of salmon left in California, yet there is a precipitous decline in the overall population of salmon along the West Coast of the United States. So much so that ocean fishing for these fish has been banned for 2 years.
