6.1 - Digital Video Requirements: Focus

Focus or defocus with intention. The autofocus function on most cameras rarely produce satisfactory results. The subject should be in focus at some point during the duration of the clip. Depth of field (DOF) can be very effective in video clips, directing attention and adding contrast. However, if the intended depth of field is too shallow, it may cause a clip to be rejected.

Tips:

  • For blur effects always keep intention, effort and composition priority
  • Blur effects are seldom effective if applied to the whole clip
  • Blurring should never compromise the quality of the clip
  • Use a tripod to avoid camera shake and reduce compression noise
