The Karnak Temple Complex comprises a vast mix of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. Building at the complex began in the reign of Sesostris I in the Middle Kingdom and continued into the Ptolemaic period, although most of the extant buildings date from the New Kingdom. The area around Karnak was the ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut ("The Most Selected of Places") and the main place of worship of the eighteenth dynasty Theban Triad with the god Amun as its head. It is part of the monumental city of Thebes. The Karnak complex takes its name from the nearby, and partly surrounded, modern village of el-Karnak, some 2.5 km north of Luxor.

The relief depict the pharaoh (on the right) making an offering to the god Khnum (also Chnum, Knum, Khnemu) in the centre. The pharaoh wears the double ostrich feather Shuti crown. Khnum appears in human form and wears the red crown, or Deshret, of lower Egypt . He carries the ankh, symbol of life in his right hand. The figure on the left is probably Hathor, goddess of love music and dance. She wears the solar disk and cow horns. The Ptolemaic and Roman temple was dedicated to the god Khnum. Only the hypostyle hall has survived and is now located in the centre of Esna."
