Launched in 1953, the festival celebrates the Capital’s official flower as a symbol of international friendship and peace. The festival is produced by the Canadian Tulip Legacy, a non-profit charitable organization established to celebrate the historic Royal gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians while preserving the legacy of the role of the Canadian troops in the liberation of Europe, and during the Second World War— as well as the birth of Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, born at the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus on 19 January 1943. Princess Margriet is the only royal born North America, a historic birth that sealed a bond between Canada and the Netherlands.
