The American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) is a large wading bird in the stilt and avocet family. It forages in shallows and mud flats for crustaceans and insects, often sweeping its bill from side to side. A distinguishing characteristic of the avocet is its black upward-curving bill. It has a reddish brown head with black and white wing feathers. The underbelly is white. The migration route of the American avocet takes it through almost every state in the western USA. It breeds in marshes, beaches and ponds as far north as southern Canada and south down to parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas but mostly east of the Rocky Mountains. This American avocet in breeding plumage was photographed while foraging along the banks of Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
