The 19th-century biographer Otto Jahn gave an anecdote claiming that Beethoven had improvised before Mozart, and that the latter had been impressed. Jahn gives no evidence of this, mentioning only that "it was communicated to me in Vienna on good authority".

In 1787 Beethoven traveled to Vienna. Here he allegedly had a meeting with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The engraving from the late 19th Century show this meeting, is but not historically proven. Wood engraving, published in 1882.
