American Federal Cavalry scouts entering the depot at Manassas Junction during the American Civil War in 1862. The subsequent battle is known as the First Battle of Bull Run or First Battle of Manassas and was fought on 21st July 1861 near Manassas, in Prince William County, Virginia. From “The Illustrated London News” dated Saturday April 12th, 1862. “The Illustrated London News” was the world’s first illustrated weekly newspaper and was first published in 1842 by Herbert Ingram.

American civil war: Sherman's brigade at Sudley Church. Vintage engraving circa late 19th century. Digital restoration by Pictore. Sherman first saw combat at the Battle of First Manassas, where he commanded a brigade of Tyler’s Division. Although the Union army was defeated during the battle, President Abraham Lincoln was impressed by Sherman’s performance and he was promoted to brigadier general on August 7, 1861, ranking seventh among other officers at that grade.
