Native American chief Samoset (1590 – 1653) was a the first indigenous person to make contact with the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. Samoset learned to speak English from sailors in Maine. Illustration engravings published 1895. Original edition is from a history book in my own archives. Copyright has expired and is in Public Domain.

Massasoit was the great indian chief who interacted with the pilgrims from the first original colony. He lived from 1581 to 1661

The Prioress, a character in "The Canterbury Tales", a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century and 'told' by a group of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Thomas à Becket at Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. This series of illustrations is from "Chaucer's Canterbury Tales", edited by John Saunders, publ. J.M. Dent & Co, 1889, and are based on those in the Ellesmere Manuscript. (Now in the public domain.)
