Magnolias existed already in the Cretaceous about 95 million years ago. Today, about 300 species are known, all originally from East Asia and America. As a cultivated or ornamental plant, magnolias are now widespread almost all over the world. In bark and wood the plant contains the alkaloid magnoflorin and is therefore considered slightly poisonous. The magnolia is not pollinated by bees, but by beetles.
