Description
An envelope sent from Australia to the Bagnoli Refugee Camp in Italy in 1949. This post-WW2 refugee - or Displaced Persons - camp was near Naples in Italy and was used as a transit centre for refugees en route to many parts of the world. The camp resembled a small town, with huts for the residents as well as some amenities such as a sports field and a library. However, conditions were not always good, with a serious epidemic of measles in 1949.
