Description
The word 'eutrophy' is formed of two parts. (Eu) is an astronomical abbreviation for the Earth, meaning 'well' or 'good'. (Trophy) refers to feeding. Eutrophism occurs when there are abundant nutrients in the water, leading to an unusual growth spurt and an exceptional amount of green. As a result, life under the water will receive little sunlight - as here, where the leaves of a pondweed have multiplied to intercept the sun's energy. Top view, looking down.
