Fireplace at Historic Mayhew Lodge In 1923, Flagstaff photographer Carl Mayhew purchased a cabin and property on the banks of West Fork of Oak Creek. Mayhew added on to the cabin and in 1926 opened Mayhew Lodge for guests. The resort gained a national and international reputation and had many famous guests including President Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Stewart, Walt Disney and Clark Gable. The Mayhew family operated the lodge through 1968. In 1975 the lodge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, the lodge was destroyed by fire in 1980 and was delisted.
