Goat herd drinking at the flooded Kunene River, watched over by boy. Kaokoland Namibia stock photo

Goat herd drinking at the flooded Kunene River, watched over by boy. Kaokoland Namibia The foreground of the photo shows the encroaching flood water. The far distance is a line of trees and some hills. A goat herd can be seen in distance, drinking at the water’s edge, and a young boy watched out over them.

The photo was taken at the end of the Marienfluss Valley in a very remote part, of north west Namibia. Marienfuss Valley is supposed to be beautiful with grasslands. However, at the time this photo was taken (February 2020) several years of failed rains had lead to drought and sand not grasslands. It was therefore particularly ironic that the Kunene River should be in flood.

The valley stretches to the Kunene River, which marks the border between Namibia and Angola. It is only possible to visit it with an off road vehicles, there are few tracks, and no mobile coverage.
