Description
Inscription on the upper surface of stone marking grave of Saint Patrick. Located on Cathedral Hill overlooking the town of Downpatrick, the informative placard text reads: "A large memorial stone of Mourne granite was place here in 1900 to mark the traditional burial-place of St. Patrick. The stone was quarried at Slieve-na-largie near Castlewellan, and it took 12 men 14 days to cut from the quarry." There is no attribution for the stone or inscription, the authors are anonymous. Tradition holds the remains of three saints were reinterred in the 12th Century by John De Courcy in fulfillment of the prophecy all three would be buried together. The other saints are Saint Brigid and Saint Columba, also known as Columcille.
