Description

Mikeno (left) which is within the DRC-Congo and Karisimbi (center) located in Rwanda but just over the other side is Uganda--these are two of the major volcanoes of the Virunga Mountain Chain that straddle the border between the DRC-Congo, Uganda and Rwanda where the endangered mountain Gorilla are still found. Surrounding these volcanoes--some of which like Nyiragongo--are still active. This is a very rich tropical high altitude farmland area that is above 7000 feet so is able to grow rich crops of potatoes (see curved rows in foreground) as well as other mid-latitude crops such as wheat, rye, barley, and all types of vegetables and even mid-latitude fruits such as strawberries. Most of the trees in the foreground and around the houses are introduced species such as eucalyptus or cypress. These rural areas in Central Africa along the Great Western Rift Valley are among the highest population density areas in all the African continent outside of the Nile Delta in Egypt.
