It is a cold and windy Christmas Eve at the beach of the Souda refugee camp in Chios Town on Chios Island in Greece. Through an opening in the clouds of the moody sky, beams of 'divine light' lights the tents of the refugees. The main (official) camp area is overcrowded so refugees have started to place small tents on the beach outside the official camp area. The refugees have put heavy tarpaulin (provided by the UNHCR) over the tents and secured them with heavy rocks (otherwise the strong winds would blow the tents away). The refugees landed on the beaches of Chios after a dangerous journey across the Aegean Sea in overcrowded inflatable dinghy boats (from the coast of Turkey, seen in the background). Many of the refugees, children and adults - single travellers and families, have lived in tents in the camp since EU signed the agreement with Turkey and the European border closed in March 2016. At the moment about 1000 refugees are living in this camp.
