Morse code uses only short and long codes to represent letters and numbers. For example, the distress signal "SOS" is "... ---...". "SOS" is typed as one letter with no space between three letters. "SOS" has no meaning, and was adopted as the code that was easiest to telegraph and easy to hear. It was in 1906 that "SOS" was adopted as a universal distress signal.
