Buddha himself was cremated, so his followers often follow his lead in their last rites. Most Bhutanese are Vajrayana Buddhist, believing in reincarnation. When a person dies, the community mourns for 49 days. During this period, a series of elaborate rituals is practiced, to ensure the deceased has a smooth rebirth.
