Canal Street - Manhattan, Central Park - Manhattan, New York City, New York State, Sixth Avenue
New York City, USA - October 5, 2014: Looking down (or looking south) the 6th Avenue (or Avenue of the Americas which is the official name, but seldom used) from the 59th Street (or Central Park South) on a morning in fall. Many different motor vehicles, pedicabs and a horse-drawn carriage are seen in the avenue running northbound (or uptown). Sixth Avenue begins four blocks below Canal Street and ends at Central Park South (where the photographer was located). The avenue's official name was changed to Avenue of the Americas in 1945 to honor Pan-American ideals and principles and the nations of Central and South America, and to encourage those countries to build consulates along the avenue. Round signs (attached to streetlights on the avenue) honor Barbados, Argentina and Costa Rica.
