Description

On the death of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, the people of Norfolk (Nelson's birthplace) raised money to build a memorial pillar on the South Denes in Great Yarmouth. The column was erected in 1819, predating the better-known Nelson's Monument in Trafalgar Square by over 20 years. The column is topped by a figure of Britannia. On each side of the base are carved the names of the ships in which Nelson achieved his most famous victories - HMS Captain, HMS Elephant, HMS Vanguard and HMS Victory. Above these names are carved the names of the naval battles - St Vincent, Copenhagen, Aboukir and Trafalgar.
