The sky viewed from Bergen on the West Coast of Norway on an evening in early autumn. Puffy pink clouds fills much of the sky. The clouds are called altocumulus (from latin alto=high and cumulus=heaped). When these types of clouds fills most of the sky, the sky is called mackerel sky or buttermilk sky. Pink clouds occur just prior to sunset (as well as just after sunrise) as a result of clouds reflecting the red light that dominates when the angle between the sun and the horizon becomes less than 6 degrees.
