Female eastern monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus plexippus) on New England aster in a pollinator meadow, with blurred white wildflowers in foreground. The female can be identified by the absence of a bulge in the wing vein nearest her body. Taken in September at a pollinator meadow in a Connecticut nature preserve as she fuels up for her long migration to Mexico. Once listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, this migratory subspecies was reclassified as Vulnerable in 2023. Its southward migration—up to 3,000 miles by the same individual—is the longest of any butterfly in the world.
