Indian Elephants in Bhandipur Reserve Forest in Karnataka, India
Indian Elephant .Elephas maximus Linnaeus. This picture was taken at Bandipur National Park, Karnataka State in India winter season. On that day we heard chital and sambar alarm continuously, we came to a conclusion that there must be a Tiger or a Leopard movement. We were anxious to see and take picture of them. In wild life any thing may happen at any movement, our vehicle moved towards where the alarm noise came from, unfortunately our vehicle stopped. We saw infront of fifty feet a Tusker standing on the road, we waited for a few minutes, as the elephant stood still and then i took this picture. The Indian Elephant rarely exceeds 10 ft. 6 in. (3.20 m.) at the shoulder. The average height of an adult male is 9 ft. (2.75 m.). One of the main visible distinctions between the Asian and African elephant is the size of the their ears. The trunk ends in a single ' lip ' in contrast with two equal _ sized ' lips ' in African species. Generally only the males have large tusks, the size of the tusk may sometimes go up to 1.8 m. curved, straight, or pointed downwards. In India elephants chiefly frequent areas covered with tall forests where the ground is hilly or undulating, and where bamboos grow in profusion. They are extremely adaptable and will live in steamy humid jungle or in cool elevated forests. The bulls when they arrive at a certain age live as solitaries. A solitary bull will graze with a herd when it happens to be in the same patch of jungle, and will seek the herd when the urge to mate is on him and desert it again when his desire is appeased. The food consists of various kinds of grasses and leaves of wild bamboos and plantains, all species of crops, and the bark of particular kinds of trees. A full _ grown elephant will eat fro 600 to 700 lb ( 270 to 320 kg ) of green fodder a day. Elephants have very poor sight ; the senses of smell and hearing are developed, more so than in most animals.
