Brest, France - July 24 2017: The Tour Tanguy, Bastille de Quilbignon or Tour de la Motte Tanguy is a medieval tower on a rocky motte beside the Penfeld river in Brest, France. Probably built during the Breton War of Succession, it faces the château de Brest and is now accessed by a road off the square Pierre Péron, at one end of the pont de Recouvrance. Since the 17th century, the château de Brest has retained its military vocation and is currently the seat of the Préfecture maritime (maritime prefecture) and the Commandement de la Force océanique stratégique (command of the strategic oceanic force).
City center & pedestrian shopping are called Square Mathon. Named after Jean-Baptiste Mathon, architect of the reconstruction of Brest. It is between the two main streets Siam and Jean Jaurès, separated by the Place de la Liberté. Initially, it was a green space created by Mathon. It was redesigned in 1999 by the architect Bernard Huet who dug the space to allow Square Mathon to communicate with the Place de la Liberté. The site revealed the remnants of the ramparts of the old city: a stretch of paved road, a counterscarp, a remnant of the advance of the Saint-Louis gate, a moat.
