A monarch is sitting with a adult caterpillar on a milkweed plant. This is the only plant the monarch will lay eggs on and the caterpillar will eat. This shows a flowering milkweed in mid to late summer. I raised the caterpillar and the butterfly from eggs. I release the butterflies in the wild once their wings are dry and they can fly.

Amazing moment about butterfly change form chrysalis.
Caterpillars are the larval stage of members of the order Lepidoptera. As with most common names, the use of this term is actually inconsistent, because sawfly larvae are also often referred to as caterpillars. Both lepidopteran and symphytan larvae have an eruciform body shape.

Isolated life cycle of Tawny Rajah butterfly with caterpillar and chrysalis
A monarch caterpillar is shown in 6 stages of shedding until the skin falls away and a chrysalis begins to take shape. The first stage happens after the caterpillar has fastened itself with silk to a branch and hangs in the shape of a J. Then the skin of the caterpillar slowly splits and moves upward until the crinkled skin drops off because of the wiggling movement of the caterpillar. What is left is a chrysalis which dries and shrinks a bit.

Pine Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa): the larva is a major forest pest, living communally in large "tents", usually in pine trees but occasionally in cedar or larch, marching out at night in single file (hence the common name) to feed on the needles. The species is notable for the behaviour of its caterpillar larvae, which overwinter in tent-like nests high in pine trees, and which process through the woods in nose-to-tail columns, protected by their severely irritating hairs.
