Chenonceau, Indre-et-Loire department, Centre-Val de Loire, France: Château de Chenonceau spanning the river Cher, one of the best-known châteaux of the Loire Valley, UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle consists of an almost square residential building, which is adjoined by a gallery to the south. The two buildings stand in the water of the Cher. The bridge over the river was built (1556–1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, and the gallery on the bridge, built from 1570 to 1576 to designs by Jean Bullant.
