Zipaquira, Colombia: Looking Into The Barrel Vault At The New Catedral De Sal, Located In The Old Halite Mines, A Few Hundred Feet Below The Surface On The Andes Mountains The interior of the Catedral de Sal, or the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá, located about 49 kilometres north of the capital city of Bogota, at an altitude of 2652 metres above sea level on the Andes, in the department of Cundinamarca, Colombia, South America. The new Cathedral, located several hundred feet below the surface of the earth, in an old Halite salt mine, has been built about 200 feet below the older one. It was completed in 1995. Lit by LED lights which continuously change colour, the church is a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination. The cross behind the main altar is said to be the largest 'indoor' cross in the world. Mahabalipuram, India: 1300 Year Old Pancha Rathas, sculpted in Granite Image shows the Arjuna and Draupadi Rathas of the Pancha Rathas (also known as Pandava Rathas), a monument complex at Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Dating from the late 7th century, it is attributed to the reigns of King Mahendravarman I and his son Narasimhavarman I (630–680 AD) of the Pallava Kingdom. The Arjuna Ratha is the monument in the centre, Nandi, the bull, can be seen to the right. To the left is a section of the Bhima Ratha and behind the Arjuna Ratha, is the Draupadi Ratha.The structures are without any precedence in Indian temple architecture and are carved out of a single granite rock each. Remarkably well preserved for monuments that are over 1300 years old; they withstood the ravages of the Tsunamis of the 13th Century and 2004. They however display the effects of wind and sand erosion of over a thousand three hundred years. These are not temples as they are unfinished, and were never consecrated. Only about about 15 inches can be woven in a whole day; it takes between 15 to 20 days to weave a whole Sari. Each Sari is unique and the design is hardly ever repeated. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman engineering and architecture. Originally the Flavian Amphitheatre, construction of the Colosseum began under the rule of the Emperor Vespasian in around 70 - 72 AD. The top level was finished and inaugurated in 80 AD by his son Titus. Over 9000 wild animals were said to have been killed during the inaugural games. Colombia: Rows Of Neatly Arranged, Typical, Traditional Colombian, Sombrero Vueltiao Hats On Display The hats in column two to five are typical Sombreros Vueltiao (Colombian Spanish for turned hat), is a traditional hat from Colombia, and one of it's national symbols. It is made out of Gynerium sagittatum, known locally as caña flecha, a type of cane that grows in the region. The quality of the hat is determined by the number of 'laps' used, and its bending flexibility. The making of the hat originated amongst the Zenú tribes of coastal Colombia. The Colombian delegation to the 2004 Olympics wore the Vueltiao during the opening ceremony. Zipaquira, Colombia: Looking Into The Barrel Vault At The New Catedral De Sal, Located In The Old Halite Mines, A Few Hundred Feet Below The Surface On The Andes Mountains The interior of the Catedral de Sal, or the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá, located about 49 kilometres north of the Capital city of Bogota, at an altitude of 2652 metres above sea level on the Andes, in the department of Cundinamarca, Colombia, South America. The new Cathedral, located several hundred feet below the surface of the earth, in an old Halite salt mine, has been built about 200 feet below the older one. It was completed in 1995. Lit by LED lights which continuously change colour; the church is a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination. The cross behind the main altar is said to be the largest 'indoor' cross in the world.
