Located in Coronado National Forest just north of Tucson, Arizona, the Santa Catalina Mountains are considered Tucson's most prominent mountain range. Vegetation varies from ponderosa pines on Mount Lemmon (the highest peak at just over 9,000 feet) to unique desert vegetation in lower elevations. At approximately 2,500 feet, the foothills appear miniaturized in comparison to the majestic mountains. Panoramic, HDR image.

The Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is one of the iconic plants of the Sonoran Desert in Southern Arizona and Western Sonora, Mexico. These plants are large cacti that develop branches as they grow and mature. The branches generally bend upward but not always. The fluted trunks and branches of the saguaro are covered with protective spines. In the late spring the plant develops white flowers and red fruit forms in the summer. Saguaros are found only in the Sonoran Desert. To thrive they need water and the correct temperature. At higher elevations, the cold weather and frost can kill the saguaro. The Sonoran Desert experiences monsoon rains during July and August. This is when the saguaro obtains the moisture it needs to survive and thrive. These saguaro cacti were found in Catalina State Park near Tucson, Arizona, USA.

Sabino Canyon began with the formation of the Santa Catalina Mountains over 12 million years ago. The present-day varieties of plant life began appearing between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago. The earliest human occupants of the area were the Native American Hohokam people. In 1905, Sabino Canyon was placed under the control of the United States Forest Service. This view of a Giant Saguaro forest was photographed from the Esperero Trail. Sabino Canyon is in the Coronado National Forest near Tucson, Arizona, USA.

We paused while I unpacked my gear to capture Sego Lilies (Scientific Name: Calochortus nuttallii) growing along the Turkey Creek Trail. Native Americans taught starving Mormon pioneers to use Sego Lily bulbs as food and now it is the state flower of Utah. The flowers, also known as Mariposa Lily, are among stalks and seed heads of Wild Barley (Scientific Name: Hordeum spontaneum).

Arizona's Catalina Highway (also known as Mount Lemmon Highway) -- the only paved road leading to Mount Lemmon in Coronado National Forest located in the Santa Catalina Mountain Range -- is bordered by a mountain on one side and cliffs on the other. Saguaro and various other desert shrubs cling to the rocky mountainside. Every sharp turn along this curving road leds to more impressive views and dramatic scenery.

The Whetstone Mountains located in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, are a part of the Coronado National Forest. The mountains are steep and rugged, with Apache Peak being its highest point. The foothills are covered in dense scrub, grasses, cacti, succulents, while low woody trees can be found at the higher elevations. The rising sun casts shadows across portions of the desert floor and mountain range under a magnificent blue sky. Panoramic image.
