Nurses from the Royal Armoured Medical Corp (RAMC) attend to a soldier who has had his hand blown off by an IED Pantridge Army Reserves Centre, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK. 18/10/2015. Nurses from the Royal Armoured Medical Corp (RAMC) attend to a soldier in a simulated exercise, where he has had his hand blown off by an IED. Soldiers from the RAMC are skilled at producing life-like replicas and prosthetics of battlefield trauma, which helps prepare soldiers for real-life situations. In this case, a silicone arm and partial hand is formed over realistic pig bones and tendons along with silicone pipes, then covered a silicone skin and a layer of raw pork (some rotting and some burned) and blood to be as realistic as possible in looks, feel and smell. The medics in this exercise assessed the situation and performed an at-wrist amputation on the prosthetic arm, during which pig blood was pumped through the silicone pipes to create realistic bleeding. Pigs are used in this training as the flesh and anatomy is very similar to human. This exercise was open to the press and facilitated by the British Army Press Office. field hospital stock pictures, royalty-free photos & images
