The kiss of Judas, also known as the Betrayal of Christ, is the act with which Judas identified Jesus to the multitude with swords and clubs who had come from the chief priests and elders of the people to arrest him, according to the Synoptic Gospels. The kiss is given by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper and leads directly to the arrest of Jesus by the police force of the Sanhedrin. The garden of olive trees where Jesus Christ was arrested the day before his death. The current trees date back to the turn of the 12th/13th century (some of the oldest deciduous trees in the world), and their roots are even older. Next to the garden stands the Church of All Nations, built by the Franciscans in the early 1920s.
"While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. (Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, aThe one I kiss is the man. Arrest him!ai) Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, aGreetings, Rabbi,ai and kissed him. Jesus said to him, aFriend, do what you are here to do.ai Then they came and took hold of Jesus and arrested him. (Matthew, Chapter 26, 47-50). Woodcut after a drawing by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (German painter, 1794 - 1872) from my archive, published in 1877."
