D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, was born in 1110 and died in Lisbon, 1185. Mamede in 1128. He proclaimed himself King of the County of Portugal, separating it from the Castilian monarchs, culminating with the independence of the kingdom in 1143, in Portugal, continuing his conquests to the Algarve in 1185.
